Did You Know? The Remarkable Story of Moringa Seed Oil

An ancient oil, a perfume-maker's secret and a beautiful choice for mature skin

Did you know that Moringa Seed Oil was once so highly valued for holding fragrance that it became a favourite oil of perfume makers?

Long before we had modern preservatives, elaborate skincare routines or shelves filled with beauty products, people had already discovered that the seeds of the moringa tree contained a rather remarkable oil.

It was light, nourishing and unusually resistant to becoming rancid. It could also absorb and retain delicate scents. This made it a valuable base for precious perfumes and scented preparations.

Today, Moringa Seed Oil is finding a new audience among people looking for simpler and more natural ways to care for their skin, especially skin that has become drier with age.

But its history is only the beginning.

Did you know Moringa Seed Oil does not come from moringa leaves?

When most people hear the word moringa, they think of the nutritious green leaf used to make powder, capsules and tea.

Moringa Seed Oil is different.

It is pressed from the seeds found inside the long pods of the Moringa oleifera tree. These seeds contain a pale golden oil traditionally known as Ben Oil.

The leaves and seeds come from the same extraordinary tree, but they serve very different purposes:

Moringa Leaf is used as a nutritious food.

Moringa Seed Oil is used topically to nourish the skin and hair.

The Moringa Seed Oil offered by Luv Your Age is for external use.

Did you know its natural stability is unusual?

All natural oils eventually oxidise. Exposure to air, heat and light can cause an oil to deteriorate, develop an unpleasant smell and become rancid.

Moringa Seed Oil is naturally more resistant to oxidation than many other plant oils. Modern research into its fatty-acid profile supports what traditional users observed centuries ago: this is an unusually stable oil.

That quality mattered enormously before refrigeration and synthetic preservatives existed. Perfume makers needed an oil that would hold valuable fragrances without quickly spoiling, and Moringa Seed Oil was particularly well suited to the task.

Its stability is still valuable today because freshness matters in a product we apply directly to our skin.

Did you know mature skin produces less of its own protective oil?

Many of us notice that our skin changes as we grow older. It may feel comfortable one day and dry or tight the next. Areas that were once oily can become noticeably drier, and products we used for years may no longer feel sufficient.

This is not because our skin has "failed." It is part of the natural ageing process.

With age, and particularly after hormonal changes, the skin often produces less of its own protective oil. Its moisture barrier may become less effective, allowing water to escape more easily from the skin's surface.

This can contribute to:

dryness and tightness

rough or flaky areas

reduced softness and suppleness

a dull or tired appearance

greater sensitivity to wind, air-conditioning and harsh cleansers

Mature skin often responds beautifully to a routine that replaces both the hydration and the nourishment it is missing.

Did you know oil and hydration are not the same thing?

This is one of the most useful things to understand about skincare.

Dehydrated skin needs water. Dry skin needs oil.

It is possible for our skin to be dry, dehydrated, or both.

Moringa Seed Oil is an emollient. This means it helps soften and smooth the surface of the skin while supporting its protective moisture barrier. However, the oil does not provide water by itself.

This is why I love pairing it with Hyaluronic Acid Serum.

Hyaluronic Acid attracts and holds water at the skin's surface. Moringa Seed Oil then provides a nourishing final layer that helps soften the skin and slow the loss of that moisture.

Rather than asking one product to do everything, the two products perform different but complementary jobs.

Did you know Moringa Seed Oil is naturally rich in oleic acid?

Moringa Seed Oil contains a high proportion of oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid also found in olive oil.

Oleic-acid-rich oils are known for their rich, softening feel. They can be particularly appealing to people whose skin has become dry, rough or less supple.

Of course, natural does not automatically mean suitable for everyone. Every person's skin is different. If your skin is highly reactive or you have a known allergy, patch-test any new product on a small area first.

A simple Moringa Oil ritual for mature skin

Skincare does not need to involve ten different products. A simple ritual can be effective when we understand the role of each step.

Begin with clean, slightly damp skin. Do not dry your face completely after cleansing.

Apply Hyaluronic Acid Serum. Smooth a small amount over the face, neck and décolletage while the skin is still slightly damp.

Follow with Moringa Seed Oil. Warm a few drops between your fingertips and gently press them into the skin.

Give some attention to forgotten areas. Massage any remaining oil into your hands, cuticles, elbows or the dry ends of your hair.

Begin with only a few drops. More is not necessarily better; you can always add another drop if your skin needs it.

During the day, remember that facial oil does not replace sunscreen.

Perhaps the most important thing to know…

Ageing skin is not something we need to fight.

It is skin that has protected us from the sun, wind and weather; expressed our emotions; and accompanied us through every stage of our lives. Its needs may have changed, but that does not mean it needs an endless collection of complicated products.

Sometimes it simply needs us to pay attention.

Moringa Seed Oil has travelled a fascinating path, from the seeds of an ancient tree, to the hands of perfume makers, and now into modern natural skincare. Its history is intriguing, but its enduring appeal is beautifully simple: it offers rich, gentle nourishment for skin that is ready for a little more care.

And now you know.
